Ancienne et très illustre famille des Pouilles, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. L'origine de ce patronyme, selon les généalogistes faisant autorité, doit être recherchée dans un surnom, donné à un ancêtre, aujourd'hui inconnu, basé, quant à lui, sur le terme grec « kuathos » (= vase, tasse, mais aussi cocotte), peut-être pour signifier que l'ancêtre était un vendeur d'eau itinérant.
