Antigua familia de Apulia, de clara y ancestral virtud, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. El origen de esta cognominación, según genealogistas autorizados, debe buscarse en el término latino medieval "caza" (= cucharón de metal, cacerola), un instrumento utilizado principalmente por alquimistas y herbolarios en la preparación de sus mezclas.
