Antigua e ilustre familia veneciana, de clara y ancestral virtud, repartida a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Italia y del mundo. El origen de este apellido, según genealogistas autorizados, debe buscarse en el nombre italiano medieval "Cecco", a su vez forma dialectal aférica del pentagrama "Francesco". La base del nombre se encuentra en el latín medieval y deriva del germánico "franco", signo de pertenencia de los francos al pueblo germánico. Posteriormente, el valor étnico del apodo indica a los franceses en general y, recién a partir del siglo XI, se convierte en nombre propio. Según algunas reconstrucciones heráldicas, la familia podría ser de la misma agnación que el noble Cecconi de Toscana con quien comparte el antiguo blasón.
