Ancienne et illustre famille vénitienne, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie et du monde. L'origine de ce nom de famille, selon les généalogistes faisant autorité, doit être recherchée dans le nom italien médiéval "Cecco", à son tour forme dialectale aphérétique de la portée "Francesco". La base du nom se trouve dans le latin médiéval et dérive du germanique « Franc », signe d'appartenance des Francs au peuple germanique. Par la suite, la valeur ethnique du surnom désigna les Français en général et, ce n'est qu'à partir du XIe siècle qu'il devint un nom propre. Selon certaines reconstructions héraldiques, la famille pourrait être de la même agnation que les nobles Cecconi de Toscane avec qui elle partage l'ancien blason.
