Antiga e ilustre família veneziana, de clara e ancestral virtude, espalhada ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália e do mundo. A origem deste sobrenome, segundo genealogistas de autoridade, deve ser buscada no nome italiano medieval "Cecco", por sua vez forma dialeto aferética da equipe "Francesco". A base do nome é encontrada no latim medieval e deriva do germânico "franco", sinal de pertencimento dos francos ao povo germânico. Posteriormente, o valor étnico do apelido passou a indicar os franceses em geral e, somente a partir do século XI, tornou-se um nome próprio. De acordo com algumas reconstruções heráldicas, a família poderia ser da mesma agnação do nobre Cecconi da Toscana com quem compartilha o brasão antigo. Em todo o caso, está presente no território veneziano desde finais do século XVI e nessa nobreza foi acolhido pelos méritos adquiridos na guerra de Cândia e na sequência da habitual doação
