Ancient and illustrious Tuscan family, of clear and ancestral virtue, spread over the centuries in various regions of Italy. Precious family memories handed down that it, until at least the fifteenth century, enjoyed the title of the marquis; many centuries later, however, its exponents were dedicated to supervising trade on the Arno river in order to check that the goods sailing to Florence were not tampered with from Pisa. In any case, this family originated from the origin between two illustrious families: the Ceccotti of Tuscany and the Balugani of Emilia-Romagna. The former in ancient times distinguished themselves mainly as landowners in the Florentine area but many of them also dedicated themselves to ecclesiastical careers, the latter occupied the primary offices at home and beyond. Tradition has it that a branch of the Balugani took refuge in Tuscany to escape retaliation against the Ghibellines and that it joined the Ceccotti

Blasone della famiglia Balugani ricostruito da un disegno conservato presso la Biblioteca Comunale dell'Archiginnasio di Bologna nell'opera "Il Blasone bolognese, cioè Arme gentilizie di famiglie bolognesi, nobili, cittadinesche e aggregate" di Floriano Canetoli realizzata tra il 1791 e il 1795.
