Antica ed illustre famiglia toscana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Preziose memorie familiari tramandato che essa, sino almeno al XV secolo, godeva del titolo marchionale; molti secoli dopo, invece, i suoi esponenti furono dediti al vigilare il commercio sul fiume Arno in modo da controllare che le merci in navigazione verso Firenze non venissero manomesse da Pisa. In ogni modo questa casata è sorta dall'origine tra due illustri famiglie: i Ceccotti di Toscana ed i Balugani dell'Emilia-Romagna. I primi in epoche remote si distinsero prevalentemente come proprietari terrieri nel fiorentino ma molti di loro si dedicarono anche alle carriere ecclesiastiche, i secondi occuparono le primarie cariche in patria e non solo. Tradizione vuole infatti che un ramo dei Balugani abbia rifugiato in Toscana per sfuggire alle ritorsioni contro i ghibellini e che qui si sia unito ai Ceccotti. Tra i personaggi
