Antica ed assai nobile famiglia romana, di chiara ed avita virtù, anticamente conosciuta come Cithera, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Le prime notizie sul casato si hanno già nel XIII secolo, con alcuni atti conservati nell'Archivio Urbano. La famiglia si è imparentata con altre nobili casate, come gli Albertini, dal 1507, i Capocci, dal 1520, i Frangipani, nel medesimo anno, con i Galliani, nel 1562, con gli Americi, i Muti e i Palatini nel 1563 e con i Valle, nel 1570. Nella Chiesa di San Gregorio son presenti due lapidi; la prima recita: "Camilli de Cithera Nobilis Romani Hic Ossa Requiescunt Vixit Annos XXXX. Mens VI, Dies XXX, Anno D.ni MDLXX"; l'altra dice: "Dilectissimae Conjugi Hyeronimae de Valle Nob. Rom. Quae Vixit Annos LIII. Mens IV, Dies IV. Camillus de Cithera Nob. Rom. Multis Cum Lacrimis Monumentum Hoc Fieri Curavit MDLXX, die XIX, Mens. Septem". Altro
