Antica ed assai nobile famiglia abruzzese, le cui origini si vuol derivino dai conti della Marsica. Berardo di Celano era entrato in possesso della contea di Loreto in seguito al matrimonio con Maria di Loreto, una nipote di re Ruggero II, ed acquistò più tardi anche la contea di Conversano. I Celano, che erano imparentati anche con i Palearia, erano dunque, nell'ultimo decennio del secolo XII, una delle famiglie più influenti dell'Abruzzo. Il casato rifulse nobiltà anche in Napoli, al seggio di Nido, in San Giorgio, in Polistina ed in Sicilia, divenendo signora di ben 22 baronie. Ma, d'altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che resero illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali e nel servizio militare.
