Antigua y muy noble familia española, de clara y ancestral virtud, repartida a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Europa. Las primeras referencias a la familia se dan ya a finales del siglo X II, apareciendo entre las familias que fundaron la ciudad de Vitoria-Gasteiz, en la provincia de Álava. Posteriormente los Celli se destacaron particularmente en las artes militares y diplomáticas, encontrándose entre los que negociaron el Tratado de los Pirineos con Francia, el 7 de noviembre de 1659. En ese mismo período una rama de la familia, como muchas otras familias nobiliarias españolas, pasó a residir en el Reino de Nápoles. También tenemos motivos para creer que la familia Celi fue siempre una rama de esta misma familia, con una sola "l", que floreció en Messina en los siglos XV-XVII. En todo caso, la familia Celli figura ataviada con el título de Duque de Frisia,
