Famille possessionnée au Monastier. Connue depuis Artaud, docteur ès-droits, nommé juge de la vicomté de Polignac et de la Cour commune du Puy, par lettres du roi Louis XI, le 22 sept. 1461. Il devint dans la suite lieutenant du bailli royal du Velay (1483-1493) et s'allia à Louise de Fay avant 1507, époque où vivait noble Héracle, tige des seigneurs de l'Herm et frère de Pierre, tige des seigneurs de Mercuret, par alliance (8 janv. 1597) avec l'héritière des Alferand de Mercuret. Vidal fut compris dans la taxe faite sue les nobles de la sénéchaussée de Nîmes, pour les ban et arrière-ban, le 11 oct. 1541. Cette branche a été maintenue dans sa noblesse en Languedoc le 18 septembre 1669. Celle des Cenat de l'Herm a été maintenue dans sa noblesse le 15 janvier 1671. Trois prêtres appartenant à cette maison sont inscrits sur la liste des émigrés de la Haute-Loire et furent déportés en 1794. Nombreux officiers.
