Si ritiene che la famiglia abbia origine con gli antichissimi Crescenzi romani derivati dal celebre tribuno Crescenzo che Ottone III fece impiccare ai merli di Castel S. Angelo. Paolo e Berardino furono alla prima crociata e Stefano osò rapire il papa Gregorio VIII mentre celebrava la messa di Natale in S. Maria Maggiore. Si ritengono dei C., antichissimi cardinali, fra i quali Crescenzo nel 1102, Cencio nel 1106, altro Cencio nel 1150, Cinzio nella medesima epoca ed un terzo Cencio nel 1191. Emersero i cardinali Tiberio creato da Innocenzo X; Baldassarre nel 1697; Serafino, arcivescovo di Benevento, creato cardinale nel 1734 ed altro Baldassarre innalzato alla Sacra Porpora nel 1761. Giovanni nel 1376 era capitano generale del popolo romano e comandante supremo del patrimonio di S.
