Antica famiglia della terra di S. Sofia, nella Romagna toscana. Doveva essere una delle primarie anche nel 1548 quando, essendosi colà recato il Duca Cosimo I dei Medici, fu alloggiato nella casa della famiglia, che in memoria di tal fatto aggiunsero in capo al loro stemma l'arma del sovrano. Vi godettero i primi onori e s'imparentarono con nobili familgie. Andrea, di Michele, di Jacopo, sposò Cleofe, figlia del conte Cesare Malatesta, dei Conti di Montevecchiè. Marcantonio, di Giulio, di Pierfrancesco, addottoratosi in Pisa, nel 1588, fu nel 1595 gevernatore di Cervia. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Italiano, coi titoli di nobile di Arezzo, conte di Fossacanna e Piandogna, in persona di Scipione di Nicolò, di Scipione, di Nicolò, di Scipione, di Scipione conte di Fossacanna e Piandogna e dei figli: Nicolò, Giulia, Giuseppina; e delle figlie del detto Nicolò di Scipione, di Nicolò, di Scipione: Pia ed Onorina.
