Famiglia patrizia e dogale genovese. In origine i Centurione furono, anzichè una famiglia, un casato costituito da famiglia diverse formanti albergo sotto questo nome, comune a tutte. Intorno alla metà del secolo XIV si collegarono insieme le Famiglie Oltramarino, Becchignone, Bestagni e Cantelli, cui poi si unirono gli Scotto, i Travesio ed altri, formando così il casato Centurione. Donde abbiano preso questo nome non è chiaro, sia che già esistesse l cognome di una famiglia, che il Ganduccio vuole venuta con quel grado militare o con quel cognome da Roma in Genova intorno all'anno 1200, sia che abbiano dato alla loro ditta commerciale un nome simbolico. Di tutte queste famiglie, durarono più a lungo la Oltramarina, la Cantelli, la Becchignone, spentesi nel secolo XIX, restando unica superstite ancora fiorente, la Scotto. I Cantelli erano già in Genova circa l'anno 1200, venuti da Arenzano e da Chiavari; qualche loro linea
