Fin dal secolo XII era annoverata fra le primarie famiglie, e circa al 1360 dette il suo nome ad un Albergo, cui si aggregarono molti degli Scotti. Ebbe il marchesato di Torre e Campi nella diocesi di Tortona, quello di Zerba, Cerreto e Tartago, e l'altro di Morzasco; la signoria di Gorreto in Val di Trebbia, e la contea di Visone nel Monferrato. L'imper. Ferdinando III con diploma dato in Ratisbona il 21 aprile 1654 innalzava il maggiorato dei Centurioni-Scotti al grado di principe del S.R.I.* concedendogli, tra gli altri privilegii, quello della zecca. Ugo clavigero del Comune genovesse nel 1175 e Balduino console di giustizia; altri pure conseguirono la stessa dignità. *Sacro Romano Impero, nome ufficialmente assunto dal ricostituito Impero Romano d'Occidente dopo la solenne incoronazione di Carlo Magno in Roma (800).
