Antica famiglia, di chiara ed avita nobiltà originaria della Castiglia e, più precisamente delle montagne di Leon, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Europa. Il capitano Don Alonso Cerrato, nativo di Morón de la Frontera (Cadiz) e sua moglie Doña Ana María de Figueroa, nativa di Caceres, sono stati i genitori della signora Ambrosia Cerrato Figueroa, che ha sposato in Panama, il 13 luglio 1636, Don Bartolomeo de Muxica-Lazcano e San Juan, nato a Las Palmas di Gran Canaria il 1° dicembre 1602, capitano di fanteria. In Las Palmas, costoro posero la loro dimora e, da tal felice matrimonio, nacquero quattro figli. Don Alonso de Muxica-Lazcano e Cerrato Figueroa, primogenito, nato a Las Palmas il 7 novembre 1653, fu capitano di fanteria e Governatore di Gran Canaria.
