Famiglia originaria di Piacenza. Nelle storie piacentine si trovano dei membri illustri nei secolo XV XVI. Un Nicolò insegnò diritto civile nell'università di Pavia nel 1488, un Lodovico, medico e letterato noto del secolo XVI, tenne la carica di archiatra alla corte del card. Guidascanio Sforza di Santa Fiora. Il cognome Gambarelli si incontra aggiunto a un ramo della famiglia già nel 1683, epoca in cui esso ottenne la concessione del titolo di conte da Ranunzio Farnese con decr. del 7 settembre in persona di Aurelio e nei suoi discendenti m. unitamente all'investitura del feudo di Suzano (Piacenza). Il figlio Lodovico, in una patente ducale del 1713, maggio 22, è detto "cavaliere piacentino cornetta delle corazze ducali", e nel 1728 addì 27 febbraio presta giuramento di fedeltà al duca pel feudo paterno.
