It seems almost certain that the members of this family came from France; at the end of the thirteenth century we find them fixed in Montepulciano, where they already enjoyed the highest public offices. The family also lived in Siena at the same time, where Riccardo di Antonio was received as a citizen by resolution of the Collegio di Balìa in the year 1495. Riccardo was the father of Pope Marcello II. Alessandro di Ricciardo and Antonio di Ricciardo were Gonfalonieri di Montepulciano in 1542 and 1615 respectively. With Francesco Maria di Antonio, senator of Siena in 1623, the family settled permanently in this city, where it had the highest public honors. Thomas of Bartholomew was Patriarch of Jerusalem and Alexander of Marcello was archbishop of Siena in 1740.
