Parece casi seguro que los miembros de esta familia vinieron de Francia; a finales del siglo XIII los encontramos fijos en Montepulciano, donde ya disfrutaban de los más altos cargos públicos. La familia también vivía en Siena al mismo tiempo, donde Riccardo di Antonio fue recibido como ciudadano por deliberación del Collegio di Balìa en el año 1495. Riccardo era el padre del papa Marcello II. Alessandro di Ricciardo y Antonio di Ricciardo fueron Gonfalonieri di Montepulciano en 1542 y 1615 respectivamente. Con Francesco Maria di Antonio, senador de Siena en 1623, la familia se instaló permanentemente en esta ciudad, donde tenía los más altos honores públicos. Tomás de Bartolomé fue Patriarca de Jerusalén y Alejandro de Marcello fue arzobispo de Siena en 1740. En el año 1534, el Papa Pablo III fue transferido al Cardenal C., quien luego tuvo que convertirse en Papa con el nombre de Marcello II,
