Le più antiche origini della Casata vanno ricercate nel Modenese, dove era annoverata fra le famiglie medioevali che ebbero vasti possedimenti feudali, privilegi e potenza. Originaria dalla terra omonima nel Modenese, questa Casata è antichissima. Ad essa appartenne il Pontefice Silvestro II, creato l'ano 999. Un Petrus si trova nominato in un documento dell'Archivio Capitolare di Modena dell'anno 1155. Ventura di Alberto fu Anziano del Popolo di Modena nel 1254. Un ramo, dopo essersi formato in Umbria, si stabilì a Roma verso la metà del secolo XV e vi conseguì la dignità senatoria. I membri della famiglia hanno goduto la Signoria di S. Angelo col titolo di Principe, di Acquasparte, di Selce; di Ceri, di Rignano con titolo di Duca; di Riano e Monticelli e di Oliveto con titolo di Marchese e con quello di Conte di Reschio e Cantalupo.
