Famiglia originaria del Piemonte. Nel 1390 Gerardo, secondogenito dei marchesi di Ceva passò a Genova dove un Francesco nel 1522 venne aggregato all'Albergo Grimaldi con tutta la sua discendenza. Da allora i membri della fam. aggiunsero al proprio il cognome Grimaldi. Cristoforo, discendente di Gerardo, portò la sua fam. a Napoli, nel 1545 e fu infeudato di Telese, Pietracatella, Solopaca e Magliano. Giovan Francesco, fu primo marchese di Pietracatella nel 1606. Marcello, maestro di campo nel 1690, fu crato marchese dal re Carlo II di Spagna. E' da menzionarsi ancora: Giuseppe, march. di Pietracatella, che dopo d'essere stato il primo sopraintendente generale degli archivi del regno, fu nel 1840 presidente interino del Consiglio dei Ministri. Oltre al titolo di march. di Pietracatella questa fam. è stata insignita del titolo di duca delle Pesche (1624), e per successione Mastrogiudice di quello di march. di Montorio, titoli passati tutti alla famiglia Petra
