La più antica notizia di questa famiglia rimonta al 1275, nel quale anno Paolo Andrea Chiberti o Giberti, detto Chiarelli, fabbricò nel territorio di Cento una torre che, dal lui derivando il nome, fu chiamata torre Chiarelli, ed è specialmente ricordata per un lungo assedio postovi dai bolognesi contro i centesi nel 1376. Con l'andar del tempo l'originario cognome e quello derivato dal soprannome del capostipite furono usati indifferentemente o anche accoppiati; poi l'ultimo finì per sostituire il primo. Paolo di Paolo Andrea, viv. 1325, esercitò il notariato e fu padre di Pietro e di Giacomo, coi quali la famiglia si divese in due rami: il ramo di Pietro, al quale appartiene Giacomo di Marchione, uno dei consoli di Cento nel 1463, si estinse nella prima metà del secolo XVI; quello di Giacomo fiorisce tuttora. Fra i soggetti ragguardevoli di questa casa meritano particolar menzione Cesare di altro Giacomo,
