El origen de esta ilustre familia es uno de los más antiguos de los que se recuerda la historia. Los miembros de esta familia se originan, de hecho, como la familia Trigona, de ese duque Corraldo, hijo de Galardo di Montichery, quien en 765 conquistó el Castillo de Trion, en Picardía. Habiendo llegado a Sicilia desde Castilla en el siglo XVI, la rama principal retuvo el título de Barones de Trion. Las ramas cadetes son las de los Barones de Ralbiato, que se extinguieron en la familia Starrabba, y las de Chiavarelli, Nobles de Fossombrone, que se mudaron a los Estados Pontificios en el siglo XVIII.
