Antica e nobile famiglia Ligure originaria del territorio di Genova detta Chiavega o Chiavica si propagò, nel croso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Tra gli illustri membri di questa famiglia ricordiamo un Pier-Giovanni Chiavega, ascritto nel 1528 nei Cibo, e nel 1529 fu uno dei primi otto senatori-procuratori della Repubblica; successivamente ebbe il dogato nel 1557-1559. Francesco Chiavega, figlio di Pio-Giovanni Chiavega, fu senatore nel 1586, ma nei di lui figli rimase estinta la famiglia ascritta alla nobiltà. Lo stemma della famiglia Chiavega é: Spaccato; nel primo d'azzurro, al leone illeopardito d'oro; nel secondo bandato d'argento e d'azzurro.
