Famiglia assai antica ed illustre, delle sue origini non si hanno notizie certe, è comune opinione tra gli studiosi che sia oriunda del territorio di Vizcaya in Spagna ove si chiamava Chicharra o Chichirri, che si sia propagata in Italia con gli aragonesi e che per le solite cause della pronunzia dialettale, dal modo di interpretare nella scritturazione i cognomi e della paragòge sia diventato Chichiriccò. Le prime notizie sono in Messina dove esistette e non sappiamo se ancora esiste una famiglia, illustrata da un Agostino che nel 1787 venne ascritto, insieme con il suoi discendenti, alla nobiltà messinese. Successivamente troviamo i Chichiriccò in Abruzzo, dal secolo decimonono i nomi dei suoi componenti si trovano soprattutto ricordati in contratti di acquisto di terre e case.
