Familia antigua y muy noble, descendiente de Bretaña, quien, con el favor de la familia Colonna, se relacionó con Viterbo. Instalado en Vicenza, se agregó a esa nobleza en 1452, aunque ya pertenecía al noble Colegio de Notarios desde 1300. Anteriormente conocidos como los Gatos, se dice que la cognominización actual, Chieregato, Chieregati o Chiericati, deriva de la siguiente anécdota graciosa: Camillo, di Gregorio, había sido nombrado tres obispado, Camerino, Melisi y Novara: a cambio, sin embargo para ceñir la frente de la mitra episcopal, pensó que era bueno unirse en matrimonio; y queriendo mantener el recuerdo de su triple elección como obispo, adoptó el apellido de Chieregati y tomó tres cabezas de hombres con el clérigo como arma. El emperador Federico otorgó el título de Conde Palatino a la familia y, con un ducal de 1549, Gerolamo fue condecorado por la Serenissima con el título del comentario para él
