Fin dal 1100 si hanno in Siena memorie di questa illustre famiglia, col nome di conti dell'Ardenghesca, che possedevano uno Stato nel senese, con molte rocca e castella. Ranunzio ed Anselmo furono signori del castello di Macerata. Divisasi in due rami, dal primo fu continuata in Siena la casa stessa, che poi si immedesimò in quella di Zondadari, e dal secondo ebbe origine la linea di Roma fregiata dal pontefice Alessandro VII del titolo di princ. di Farnese e di Campagnano, di duca di Ariccia e di signora di Cesano, di Magliano, Scrofano. E' rimasta ereditaria dal 1712 in questa fam. la dignità di maresciallo del Conclave. Fabio fu papa , quattro furono vescovi, ed uno gran maestro dei cav. di Malta. Anche il beato Giovanni da Macerata, agostiniano, morto nel 1360, il B. Bonaventura, servita, e la B. Angiola furono dei membri della famiglia. In questa famiglia si estinguono
