Famiglia oriunda da Savona, dove un casato con tale cognome era noto nel secolo XVIII, per la fabbricazione delle famose maioliche savonesi. Nel secolo XIX s'illustrarono i due figli di Vincenzo (n. in Savona 1752, ivi m. 1822), capitano del genio nelle milizie liguri, i quali furono i generali Giovan Battista ed Agostino. Giovan Battista (n. in Savona 1779, m. in Genova 1855), sottotenente nel corpo degli ingegneri militari della Repubblica Ligure (1797), passato poi nel genio marittimo dello Stato Sardo, ne divenne rapidamente direttore col grado di maggior generale (1836). Il fratello Agostino (n. in Savona 1791, m. senza prole in Torino 1861), luogotenente nel genio militare francese (1812) e nel sardo (1815), ne diventò maggior generale (1839). Nella guerra nazionale del 1848-49 fu comandante superiore del genio al campo, luogotenente generale dopo l'assedio di Peschiera (4 giugno 1848), funzionante da capo di stato maggiore (25 agosto 1848), ministro
