Família antiga de origem grega, passada para Bari em 1085; Roberto, chamado Roberto di Bari, Senhor de Modugno, Grande Protonotário do Reino em 1273 e, portanto, o Grande Contestabile di Sicilia assinou a sentença do infeliz Corradino de Svevia. Uma filial do Chyurlia mudou-se para Giovanazzo, em 1540, e possuía o condado de Roccaforzata, em 1699; e o marquês de Lizzano por sucessão da família De Luca em 1697, com antiguidade em 1671. Foi recebido na ordem SM de Malta em 1615 como o quartel do cavaleiro Capece Zurlo e com o cavaleiro Domenico Antonio Chyurlia de Giovinazzo em 16 de agosto de 1703.
