I Della Ciaia, o Ciai, sono un'antica famiglia di Chiusi, dove ebbe posizione eminente. Così nel 1230 Guido di Cristoforo di Neri riesce a conciliare la sua città con Orvieto in seguito a trattative di cui era stato incaricato da parte i 500 suoi concittadini. Ranieri, figlio di Guido, fu mandato ambasciatore a Siena nel 1232 e suo figlio Niccolò ricoprì numerose cariche pubbliche. Andrea di Antonio fu cavaliere di Speron d'Oro; nel 1490 era potestà a Lucca e successivamente ad Ancona. Pompilio, di Annibale fu fatto cavaliere di Malta nel 1573, e suo fratello Anton Maria ottenne in quell'ordine il Priorato di Lombardia; fu governatore dell'armi del ducato di Segni e della contea di S.Fiora e nominato Luogotenente generale delle armi papali in Avignone da Leone XI, pur non avendo mai preso possesso della carica per la sopraggiunta morte del Pontefice. in quest'epoca i Della Ciaia erano già divenuti
