The Della Ciaia, or Ciai, are an ancient family from Chiusi, where they had an eminent position. So in 1230 Guido di Cristoforo di Neri managed to reconcile his city with Orvieto following negotiations with which his 500 fellow citizens had been commissioned. Ranieri, Guido's son, was sent ambassador to Siena in 1232 and his son Niccolò held numerous public offices. Andrea di Antonio was a knight of Speron d'Oro; in 1490 he was power in Lucca and subsequently in Ancona. Pompilius of Hannibal was made a knight of Malta in 1573, and his brother Anton Maria obtained the Priory of Lombardy in that order; he was governor of the arms of the duchy of Segni and of the county of S.Fiora and appointed Lieutenant general of the papal weapons in Avignon by Leo XI, although he never took possession of the position for the subsequent death of the Pope.
