Nelle carte modenesi la famiglia, originaria da Pisa, compare nella prima metà del sec. XVIII. Stefano, circa nel 1743, abbandonata la città nativa, venne a stabilirsi a Modena, dove trovò impiego presso la Corte in qualità di guardarobiere. Il 14 febbraio 1757 otteneva dal duca Francesco III d'Este il privilegio di cittadinanza modenese per sè e figli discendenti, in perpetuo. Da Gaetano di Stefano nacquero Giuseppe, ingegnere e Francesco avvocato, ambedue compromessi nei moti politici per il nostro risorgimento. Dall'avv.
