Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di Piazza, poi passata a risiedere in Messina, alla cui nobiltà fu aggregata. Il primo di lei a passar in Messina fu un Francesco, che, nel 1612, acquistò la baronia della terza Dogana di Catania e quelle di maestro notaro del Senato e della corte straticoziale di Messina, poi Regia Udienza. La progenie del detto Francesco diede origine ai diversi rami del casato. In ogni modo, il titolo di barone della terza dogana di Catania passò prima in casa Cicala dei principi di Triolo e poi in casa Capece Minutolo, principi di Collereale, ma alla fine, per donazione fatta da Andrea Capece Minutolo a Salvatore Maria Cianciolo, passò nuovamente alla famiglia Cianciolo. Un Vincenzo, qualificato come barone, fu console nobile del mare e terra di Messina, nel 1811; dal barone Giuseppe, del fu barone Vincenzo e della prima moglie Girolama Aidone degli antichi Principi d’Alcontres,
