L'origine di questa famiglia rimonta a'primi anni del XIII secolo, in cui facevano essi parte della consorteria degli Alluminati. Durante il XIV secolo se ne trovano abbondanti memorie negli archivi pubblici e nella Regia Biblioteca di Lucca. Appartennero essi più volte al Consiglio generale degli Anziani di quella Repubblica. Un Giovanni Cianferoni nel 1395 sostenne la carica suprema di gonfaloniere, e prima e poi dal 1382 al 1400 per ben dieci volte era stato nel numero degli anziani. Nel XV secolo, non molto tempo dopo la caduta dei Guinigi, i Cianferoni, di questi zelanti fautori, abbandonarono Lucca, e si trapiantarono in un paese vicino, Benobbio, dove dimorarono nei secoli XVI e XVII. Nel XVIII il Consiglio generale della Repubblica reintegrava Cirillo Cianferoni nella cittadinanza lucchese, insieme a'suoi discendenti. Detto Cirillo nel 1729 si trasferì a Napoli, dove stabilì la propria casa, la quale da pochi anni dimora a Parigi, imparentata
