Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria di Giaveno, la quale, in virtù dell'ufficio di insinuatore che godeva, ebbe la concessione d'arma. Possedeva beni feudali in Casalgrasso e teneva manifatture da seta. Giovanni Vincenzo fu segretario della comunità di Giaveno, quindi insinuatore. Suo figlio, Giambattista Cianotti, mercante di seta in Torino, fu investito di beni feudali in Casalgrasso (1669). Ottenne questa famiglia distinzione con Luigi Giuseppe, di Marcello, professore nella scuola di artiglieria, il quale fece la campagna contro i francesi, dai quali fu dichiarato ribelle e bandito. Per volere del Re Vittorio Emanuele I, andò in Russia dove fece scuola ai granduchi Nicola e Michele. Ritornato nel Piemonte ebbe il grado di maggior generale e il comando del corpo reale del genio. Fu suo figlio, Marcello, ufficiale del genio, tenente generale, senatore del Regno il 20 novembre 1861, il quale ebbe l'onore del titolo comitale il 26 gennaio 1836. Da lui
