Antica famiglia veneta, con residenza nel bellunese, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in una forma dialettale del nome del paese di Cibiana di Cadore, il cui toponimo sembrerebbe derivare da un "ager cipianum", ossia dal nome di una proprietà fondiaria di epoca romana riferita ad un "Cipius" o "Cepius". In ogni modo, secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, un Antonio Cibien, soldato di ventura al servizio della Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia, alla fine del XVI secolo, accumulò ingenti fortune ed i suoi figli ottennero il patriziato per i servigi resi alla patria e grazie alla solita offerta di "cento mille" ducati.
