Originaria di Spagna, da dove verso la fine del secolo XIV fu trasportata in Italia da Benvenuto che scelse per suo soggiorno la città di Cremona all'epoca dei Visconti. Chiamavasi dapprima de Grapis, ma col venire in Italia si volle dai suoi componenti assumere un cognome italiano che presero da un feudo di loro proprietà nel Cremonese e si dissero Conti di Cicognara. Sotto il principato del March. Nicolò III d'Este, lo stesso Conte Benvenuto venne nel 1419 da Cremona in Ferrara, e i suoi discendenti acquistarono diversi feudi in Gambalaga. Ludovico podestà di Sassuolo nel 1493. Leopoldo illustratore delle glorie artistiche italiane, fu membro del corpo legislativo nel primo regno d'Italia, e Consigliere di Napoleone I.
