Famiglia ritenuta dagli autori di origine longobarda e di cui si ha memoria dal'anno 1048. Godette nobiltà in Napoli, fuori Seggio, Caserta e Trani, al Seggio di S. Marco; ed in Trani ebbe quasi assoluto dominio con la famiglia Palagano, sicchè per la gran potenza di esse, come riferisce il Candida, ne venne il detto "per li Sifola e Palagani non si può vivere in Trani". Ricevuta nel S.M.O. di Malta il 25 ag. 1570 in persona di Scipione Sifola, ed ancora nel sec. XVII, secondo il De Lellis, ebbe un altro cavaliere di nome Luigi, il quale, prima di professare si rese monaco teatino e divenne pubblico lettore nelle case di S. Paolo e dei Santi Apostoli di Napoli. E fu pure ricevuta nell'Ordine stesso; in Priorato, pel ramo dei baroni di S. Martino, nel 1788, come quarto ava materna, del cav. Mario de Notaris, avendone fatta la prova
