Antica e nobile famiglia del Regno di Napoli, conosciuta come Cigliola o Cigliolini, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e d'Europa. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, tal casata fu tra le patrizie di Puglia ed ebbe la sua dimora nel brindisino. In alcune trascrizioni la casata Cigliola è stata confusa con quella dei Figliola, tra le più antiche di Trani, patrizia in detta città dal 1479 e decorata nel 1718 del titolo di duca di Civita Sant’Angelo. L'insufficienza di prove genealogiche a riguardo ci impedisce di cogliere la ratio di tale sovrapposizione. In ogni modo, la famiglia Cigliola, talvolta Cigliolini, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
