Family derived from the Counts of Cignano, lords of the castle of the same name in Mugello, and therefore a noble Florentine patrician, as was recognized by the judgment of the Council de '200 of Firenzo, dated 15 February 1717 in favor of the famous painter and family member of the Casa de' Medici Carlo C. (1628-1719), Bolognese nobleman. The progenitor was a ser Bartolo, by Messer Jacopo, a descendant of whom, Marco, Jacopo, Francesco, moved to Bologna, and then to forlí, where his lineage always enjoyed noble treatment. Ser Pompeo (born 1592), by Giulio Cesare, father of the aforementioned Carlo painter, was awarded the title of Conte, for the derivation from the Counts of Cignano, but without preaching. By virtue of these domestic precedents, Count Carlo Giuseppe, son of the physical professor Filireno C., of Forlí, domiciled in the Roman and Tuscan States, asked, and obtained, with a Sovereign
