Antica famiglia ghibellina, che godette nel XII secolo del Consolato fiorentino. Essendo nel 1292 stata descritta fra i magnati, restò esclusa dalle cariche pubbliche fino al 1415. Nel 1426 una sentenza del Capitano del popolo Gentile di Nanni dichiarava ribelli Giovanni e Paolo di Antonio di Lapo Ciprie, condannandoli nel capo. Riusciti a mettersi in salvo, emigrarono in Corsica, dove si stabilirono a Capo Corso vivendo là con decoro e coprendo cariche pubbliche. Un ramo della fam., passato in Marsiglia, ebbe riconosciuta l'antica nobiltà per sentenza della corte di Aix nel 1543. Un altro ramo, rappresentato da Domenico, di Giuseppe, venne in epoca più recente in Livorno, dove acquistò vasti possedimenti e dove, per rescritto del 18 settembre 1818, ebbe riconosciuta la Nobiltà e fu iscritto fra i Patrizi di Firenze. Successivamente vennero a raggiungere i loro congiunti in Livorno Sebastiano e fratelli, figli tutti di Giovanni Antonio, e anch'essi
