Família antiga e ilustre, chamada Ceraulo, Ciraulo ou Ciravolo, originária da Sicília, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. Essa cognominização, de clara influência árabe, deve derivar de apelidos originários do termo arcaico ceraulo ou ciraulo, que significa encantador de serpentes e trapaceiro, por sua vez derivados do termo grego keraùles (tocador de flauta, encantador); na década de 1400, os cerauli ou celauri ou serpari defendiam o gado das picadas da cobra, de modo que esse conhecimento também poderia derivar do ofício de serparo, realizado pelo progenitor.
