Antigua y muy noble familia siciliana, originaria de España, que, según relata Mugnos, deriva su nombre de un antiguo barón francés llamado "Cirino", escudero del Conde Roger. Algunas ramas de la familia surgieron en Nápoles y en los Abruzos y muchos de sus miembros eran caballeros en la corte angevina. En Sicilia, sin embargo, encontramos a la familia Cirino en la corte de Federico II. Un Pierbergi Cirino se casó con Messina y se enriqueció por la sucesión de vastos bienes de su tío, habiendo poseído los feudos de S. Basilio y Landone en el territorio de Milazzo 1397. Un Antonio o Antonello, hijo del mencionado Pierbergi, que fue sucedido en 1416 , a través del matrimonio, obtuvo la baronía de Melelao o Favari, en el territorio de Mineo.
