Le prime memorie di questa illustre famiglia risalgono ad un Antonio, portulano di Salerno nel sec. XIII, e ad un Pietro, che con altri nobili di Bitonto prestò danari al re Carlo I d'Angiò. Feudataria sin dal principio del sec. XV, godette nobiltà a Bitonto, Capua, Benevento e Lucera. A Napoli fu iscritta nel seggio di Portanova, nel 1788. Vestì l'abito di Malta dal 1595. Fu decorata da re Carlo di Borbone del titolo di marchese nella persona di Baldassarre, titolo che, concesso a favore del nipote Carlo, venne da questo, con regio assenso, intestato sui feudi di Torrecuso e Torrepalazzo. A Carlo successe, nel titolo e nel possesso dei feudi, il figlio Michele, morto nel 1804. La linea primogenita di questa fam. per il matrimonio di Carlo (dec. 1487) con Anna Maria Filomarino (dec. 1876), ultima dei Filomarino di Rocca d'Aspro, fu autorizzata ad aggiungere al proprio il cognome
