Dom Florindo levantou-o com o nome de Castrum Felicitatis. Somente no século X predominou o nome de Civitas Castelli. Estabelecido no município, era alternativamente gratuito e sujeito à Igreja, em Perugia e em Florença. Foi dominado pelo Da Pietramala e em 1300 por Branca Guelfucci. Em 1422, foi tomada por Braccio Fortebraccio, e após disputas amargas entre as famílias Emule dos Carlantini, Giustini e Fucci, na segunda metade da década de 1400, o senhorio dos Vitelli se estabeleceu ali. Mais tarde, com Cesare Borgia, passou definitivamente à Igreja, mas o fato de os bezerros terem o governo até os anos 1500. É a casa de Celestino II (170º pontífice). O magistrado municipal é o senhor de Pietralunga e, como tal, está registrado na lista oficial. Pietralunga é uma vila murada medieval com vista para o vale do riacho Carpinello.
