Il vescovo Florindo la fece risorgere col nome di Castrum Felicitatis. solo nel X secolo predomina il nome di Civitas Castelli. Costituita in Comune fu alternativamente libera e soggetta alla Chiesa, a Perugia ed a Firenze. Fu dominata dai Da Pietramala e nel 1300 da Branca Guelfucci. Nel 1422 fu presa da Braccio Fortebraccio, e dopo aspre contese fra le famiglie emule dei Carlantini, Giustini e Fucci, nella seconda metà del 1400 vi si stabilì la signoria dei Vitelli. In seguito con Cesare Borgia passò definitivamente alla Chiesa, ma il fatto i Vitelli vi ebbero il Governo fino al '500. E' patria del Celestino II (170° Pontefice). Il Magistrato comunale è signore di Pietralunga e come tale iscritto nell'Elenco ufficiale. Pietralunga è borgo medioevale cinto da mura, dominante la valle del torrente Carpinello.
