Gli autori di nobiliari fiorentini, tra cui non ultimi l' Ademollo Andrea e Marietta de' Ricci, assicurano essere questa famiglia proveniente dalle terre di Lucca in Toscana. Tal famiglia per come riferisce il Gamurrini ne "Istoria genealogica delle famiglie nobili Toscano et Umbro, stampato in Firenze dal Sanesi nel 1641 al volume 6", prende origine già dal XIV secolo. Numerosi personaggi di tale cognome si trovano di sovente menzionati nei documenti notarili fin dai secoli trascorsi, dai quali appare che erano di condizione nobile. Nel 1527 un Lorenzo fu tra i consiglieri dei procuratori delle mura della città di Firenze; un Duccio cooperò con gli Ufficiali di Sanità per il periodo: 1527-1532. La presenza dell'arma e del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia Ciuffetelli ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta dalla casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV secolo e deve essere ricercata in quei detti arguti che
