Antica ed assai nobile famiglia belga, originaria del territorio delle Fiandre, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee, con un cospicuo insediamento nel Nord Italia e, più precisamente, nella regione del Friuli Venezia-Giulia. La chiara nobiltà della famiglia risulta confermata dalla sua presenza nella pregevole opera "L'Armorial General" dell'araldista e genealogista olandese Johannes Rietstap, noto anche come Johannes Baptista Rietstap o Jean-Baptiste Rietstap (in francese) (Rotterdam, 12 maggio 1828 – L'Aia, 24 dicembre 1891). Tuttavia negli archivi è presente anche un altro stemma di cui però si è persa la fonte originaria. In ogni modo, la famiglia Claps appare già in territorio friulano nel XVII secolo. Ivi, infatti, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
