Antica famiglia di Rieti, ove da tempo antichissimo godeva dei primi gradi in quella magistratura, conosciuta come Clarelli o Clarella, propagatasi, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, in diverse regioni italiane ed europee, con insediamenti più cospicui in Spagna. Il primo di cui si ha certa notizia è un Nicolò, uomo di molta prudenza e capitano di gran valore, che visse nel 1330. D’altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare. Fra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, contasi: Alessandro, che sostenne la carica di gonfaloniere di Rieti negli anni 1488, 1498, 1508 e 1510; Rutilio, fratello del precedente, il quale guerreggiò in Spagna nel 1499; Mariano, il quale fu nominato oratore della Città di Rieti, da Papa Clemente VII (Medici 1527-1554).
