Famiglia originale di Bologna, fu trapiantata in Cividale del Friuli da un Boniatolo attorno al 1200. Nel 1268 Nicolò e Paolo, fratelli, furono dichiarati benemeriti dell'Impero dall'Imperatore Carlo IV e fu concesso loro di acquistare feudi principeschi e di darne ad altri investitura con diritto di alta e bassa giustizia. Fino dal XIV secolo ottennero il feudo di monte S. Vito e Giamiano nel Carso; nel 1458 il feudo patriarcale di Visinale nel Friuli e nel 1587 quello di Verso nella contea di Gorizia. I primi due feudi rimasero nella famiglia per rinnovate investiture fino alla pace di Worms, 1521 ed il terzo fino al 1870. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e
